I have often wondered how I came to have the job I have. With all the choices made, the influences around me, the people who helped along the way and fortune to smile in my direction. In thinking of the infinite happenings to bring me to this moment I begin to notice a few threads that seem to always be present. 1) The first was a Desire to dance, to move, to give what I have and find out what more I am. My intense feeling to dance, to express and to see art. I needed it and needed to experience more. 2) With the desire present, I needed the Will and Discipline to take the necessary steps forward. Being able to push through fatigue and follow through with choices. 3) The third quality I notice is an openness to new information. In essence be a sponge, absorb everything, really taking the moment to listen and feel what is being asked of you. I think these qualities are essential in being a professional artist and dancer.
My path to landing my current job was as individual to myself as everyone is individual to themselves. When I first came to the Washington Ballet I was still a student with one year left in school. I had worked for one company in the summer on tour and felt I needed more training. I mention this because in a practical way, it was my foot in the door. By the end of the year, The Washington Ballet had expressed some interest in me but I felt I needed to grow more. The year after school was full of adventure. I began auditioning for companies and with little success. I kept pushing forward and from competition I actually received my first full time position. I spent a year in France before deciding I would audition again for The Washington Ballet. Coming back to Washington with more experience and having had a job I felt I was taken more seriously. Fortune smiled, I was offered a position in the company.
I think it is important to look at yourself critically and see what you have been given, your measure of natural talent, physicality and potential, but to also know that cultivating yourself through your discipline, will, desire and openness will create a more attractive person to work with and to create on. I think these qualities in addition to what I was given by nature have made me a successful artist and given me my professional work.
