I have long been fascinated by dance and the exceptional people who make this exquisite art. Although I have photographed many dancers, I found working with Trey and his company to be a unique and exhilarating experience.
We all collaborated in choreographically creating the poses; the dancers were stationary, but imagining themselves suspended in time and space. The dance studio was kept completely dark while photographing, allowing me to “paint” the dancers' bodies with a hand held light source in a long exposure with the camera shutter open. This technique avoids harsh flash photography and thus gives the images a somewhat soft, ethereal feeling similar to charcoal drawings.
